Teenage is a phase where you feel every emotion like anxiety, fear, depression, excitement and the rest because the part of the brain dealing with them is still developing and undergoes changes. There are a lot of reasons, why teenagers these days are facing depression and that’s a growing concern among parents.
DEPRESSION: Before we talk about the causes, we first have to know what the problem means. Depression is a mental illness and could be of different types. It is a constant involuntary disturbance of emotions and not an attitude problem to be fixed on your own or thrown out. There may are various reasons for teenagers to land up in such a situation. Some of these could be as follows:
Disturbing Life Incident: A lot of children get affected severely by something that happens in their lives. It could be the death of someone they loved or the divorce of their parents or even a sort of public humiliation. This can cause distress or trauma making a way to depression for the teen.
Academic Stress: A lot of teenagers are under continuous pressure to perform well academically. They are compared and put in a competitive situation. Their parents and guides always expect the best from them, failing which they feel low about themselves and get stressed.
It has been noticed that kids living in a distressing family environment often end up with depression. They either witness quarrels or separation or arguments. They do not find happiness and feel scared, because they are still kids. Yes, Family situations are a huge reason why 2% of the total kids land up into depression.
Genetics: Quite a few children go through depression because the genes have passed onto them. But remember kids without a history of depression could also face it and vice versa.
The “love” issues: The relationship problem teenagers face, while dating is what they stress about. They are still kids and take things too seriously. The fear of parents getting you, sometimes even stops them from taking it out.
Social Pressure: The pressure among teens today is about interaction and acceptance with and from society. Being popular is most important for them and lack of it makes them feel not confident about themselves. They have poor self-esteem and do not know the importance of self-love and acceptance.
Struggling with financial conditions: Not every family is blessed with wealth and struggle with it for a certain period until they reach a balanced state. This does affect the child because they tend to compare lifestyle and commodities. Some teenagers have to work for themselves and do not find time to hang around like their other friends might be doing. They tend to fall in depression and do not understand that its a phase of life and it is okay.
Talking to your parents: remedies
Almost every teenager is filled with feelings of fear and rejection upon the fact of depression. They hesitate and feel embarrassed about the situation not being able to open up to their parents for help.
Do not expect them to understand: Your parents might not understand your state exactly but telling them your struggle with let them be able to provide you will some sort of help. Know that they would also love to get you out of it.
Write if, you cannot talk: If you cannot say your parents directly through the use of speech, then you could write your feelings down and give it to them. In this way, you would not have the fear of how to answer their questions and react to their thoughts.
Prepare what to say: If you still think talking to them directly is more comfortable then prepare yourself on what exactly would you say and how. You can add certain experiences you had which were not pleasant during this period for them to have a better picture.
Do not worry about past arguments: If you think that reaching out to them may be difficult because of the fight or argument you had with them over some reason then talk when you both are calm. Know that both the parents would put you above everything and if you have disrespected them start with an apology and simply say that you need them.
Choose one among the parent: Most of the times we are comparatively close to either the mom or dad. If you find it difficult to talk to both of them together, say it to one of them and the other will know.
Also, know that you aren’t the only one. Nothing is wrong with you and it can be cured with counseling and medicines, but until you reach out to your parents, use the resources available to you. Take to a friend, reach online and surely remember self-help is the biggest medicine. So, stay strong. Love yourself.
