What activities can be done to enhance the brain development in your child?

The development of your child’s brain starts during pregnancy and continues until your child reaches his adulthood. Most of the development happens during the initial stages of infancy. A child’s brain development depends upon the different experiences they have had, their relationships and also their environment.

While taking care of your baby and trying to build a relationship with him you can introduce him/her to new things to boost his brain development. The early stages of a baby’s brain development help in his later growth.

In addition to the genes, there are many factors that affect your baby’s brain development. Proper nutrition, varied experiences, environment around him and exposure to toxins and infections are some of the major factors, which affect his brain development.

Promoting the development of a healthy brain can also start before pregnancy. By avoiding smoking, alcohol consumption or protecting yourself from infectious diseases can also lead to a healthy brain.

Apart from proper nutrition and taking care of your baby, engaging your baby in different activities helps in his development.

Things to do for your child’s brain development are:

Play: Try and engage your baby in different games. Play with them and help them figure out different games. Playing games like “peek-a-boo” etc, increases their curiosity and also let them sense your presence. You can show them different toys and let them hold it and analyze it in their own little cute way. The value of parent-child play is immense.

Eye contact: Make eye contact while speaking to your baby. This way she’ll try and remember you and you’ll build her memory.

Talk and sing: Try talking to your baby and encourage them to be responsive too. They can answer in their own incomprehensive way but it’ll engage them in a conversation with you. Sing to them and exaggerate your mouth’s movements, let the child imitate your movements and try imitating theirs. Observe them dance to your tunes and allow them to respond in their own way.

Read to them: Read different stories to them and use lots of gestures and even toys of figures to make them understand. Trap them with your words and let them just observe you and what you are telling. It kicks starts listening and communication skills and they try to imitate you.

unconditional love

Taking them Out-doors: Take them for a stroll to enjoy the breath of fresh air. A change in the environment will pick their interest and curiosity and make them wonder about their surroundings. Point out towards different things and tell them what they are, for example, “ that is a dog, or that is a tree”.

Holding on: Let her hold onto different things and toys. This will let her hold and grasp things and try to analyze the shape, structure, and texture of that particular thing she is holding on to. It will jog her memory. You can also let her play and grasp her food and see if it’s soft, hard, hot or cold.

Proper intake of nutrition: It doesn’t matter whether your baby is being breastfed or bottle-fed as long as he is being fed properly your baby will grow healthily. After completion of six months make sure that the solid or semi-solid food, which he eats, contains all the nutrients required for your baby’s overall development.

Let her figure it out: Make her sit in front of a mirror and watch her getting amused. She’ll raise her arms, hands, wave which will help her identify herself as to what all she is doing. You can also show her different pictures and ask her “where is she?” and engage her in different conversations. Show her a family album and point towards all her relatives, help her build memory and remember them.

Cognitive games: You can give them toys and games involving building blocks, puzzles, etc which enhances their brain activity. For example, your baby will try to stack up to the blocks till they don’t fall down and they’ll figure it out on their own.

Be attentive: Be attentive and responsive to what your baby is doing. They like trying out new things when someone is observing them. It also gives your baby a sense of security for you being around. Babies who are emotionally attached tend to go out of their comfort zones.

Massage: A good massage has always been the best method towards a secure attachment with your baby. It not only helps boost the motor skills of your baby but also lowers their stress levels and relaxes them. Massage is a soothing gift to them.

Baby-proof: You can baby-proof your home and let your child wander about the whole house without being hurt. It’ll give them more opportunities to explore and discover things on their own. But setting a safe environment for her is very important.

Comfort: Let your body language and tone show that you are genuinely interested in her activities and never cease out on providing her with comfort, Love, affection, and warmth help them develop. Try and encourage her at each point to try out new things, this will help in her brain development.

Laying down the building blocks towards development at an earlier stage is very important for your baby. It might seem that they do not understand anything but sub-consciously they are and that’s the reason why they tend to observe and imitate you. Pay attention to your child as well as be responsive towards them.
