How can you know that you are pregnant with twins? What are the symptoms?
Some women who were pregnant with twins were suspected that they were carrying more than one baby from the beginning. Others say that they were surprised to find out that they were having kids.
The truth is that, since there are several signs and symptoms of a twin pregnancy, there are several overlaps with the singleton pregnancies. It is impossible to know that you are pregnant with twins or multiple babies just by gauging, how you feel or believing what the pregnancy test show at home. Only an ultrasound test can confirm if you are carrying twins or multiple babies.
Let’s take a closer look at the clues of twin babies:
Elevated HCG levels in your urine or blood (pregnancy test)
You cannot distinguish a single pregnancy or twins from a urine pregnancy test. You will have a very early positive pregnancy test if at all you are carrying twins. Suppose you are using a regular pregnancy test and not the super sensitive variety and get an immediate positive result especially a very dark positive indicator just a few days before your period is due, there will be an increased chance of you carrying twins.
But remember that home urine pregnancy tests are not reliable when it comes to the prediction of HCG. This simply indicates that you haven’t had enough water before taking the test.
A blood pregnancy test, may give you better results, but still not sure that you are carrying twins. HCG can detect a hormone in the blood of pregnant women just about 10 days before the conception and usually doubles for every 2 to 3 days, peaking into, at above 8 to 11 weeks of pregnancy.
Using harmless sound waves amplifies the fetal heart sound, usually can be distinguished late in the first trimester. A physician or a midwife can estimate if it is more than one heartbeat, which indicates that you are pregnant with more than one baby.
A mothers heartbeat cannot be mistaken for a baby’s heartbeat since the heartbeat rates differ as the rate of the heartbeat of the mother is half the rate of the babies.
But still, in some cases, the mother’s heartbeat can make a background sound which will be hard to distinguish the heartbeats of 2 or more babies.
More of morning sickness: They say that when you carry twins you will be twice as sick and thrice as tired and four times the weight. But statistically, moms of twins may experience more of morning sickness as it is estimated that you are carrying twins, which is not necessarily helpful.
Most women experience some amount of nausea and vomitings with just a single pregnancy. At the same time, there are cases where the mothers of twins and triplets say that they do not experience any kind of morning sickness. Also, mothers who have already experienced pregnancy before need not necessarily compare the amount of nausea. This is not a fact, simply an observation though.
The mothers of twins only gain about 10 pounds more than those of the singleton mother. However, the amount of weight gain of a pregnant woman can depend on her body type, her height, her pre-pregnancy weight than the number of babies she is carrying.
In addition to this, more weight will be gained by the mother later on in the pregnancy, after all, your diet may be one of the reasons why you are gaining too much weight. You may be consuming more calories. If you are concerned about your weight the best suggestion would be to talk to your doctor about consulting a prenatal nutritionist.
When you have the characteristics that have odds
While some twin pregnancies happen, some odds will have an impact on having twin babies. These odds include
• Fertility treatments
• Increased maternal age
• Family history
• Higher body mass index
• Conceiving while breastfeeding or while taking birth control pills.
Trust your intuitions always. If you have a strong feeling that you will have twins, make sure to mention it to your doctor. However, many incidents of having twin babies are random and not caused because of a particular cause. For those families, it is just a double blessing.
